Watch the short film and answer the questions that follow.
2. How does the director create the tone of the film? What techniques does he use?
3. How does this film relate to the novel, The Road? Make at least TWO connections to the novel in your response.
The tone that the director creates is suspenseful throughout the whole video clip. He creates the tone of the film by having the boy steal the food and then being chase by the "gang" along with adding the music in the background. It relates to the Road because its all about survival and not getting caught along with hiding.
ReplyDelete1) I think the tone created by the author is threatening. In the beginning I thought it was a gloomy tone however then I had a different thought of what the tone is. At first it seemed barren but then the attackers came which changed my mind.
ReplyDelete2) The tone is created by the music. In the beginning of the film the music was sad but as the film went on and the attackers showed the music went faster. This made you feel anxious about what was going to happen. I think also because there was no dialogue it made you focus on the characters and really think about what was happening.
3) My response relates to the novel because at time in the book there is a threatening feel. For example when the tattooed man tried to lure them in they could have been hurt or killed. It also relates to the book because at times in the film it did have a gloomy barren feel. The road is very dark in gloomy. We know this because the author talks about there being grey clouds and ash everywhere.
The tone that the author created is fearful. The tone is the same tone throughout the film because the boy in the film is always watching his back like when he see's the other boys in the video he hides down. To creat this tone the director uses suspenseful music in the background that set the tone really well. This film relates to the novel when the one part in the book when the boy and man run into another man and the man tries to take the little boy but the man ends up shooting the other man.
ReplyDelete1 & 2. The director created a suspenseful tone to the short film. The suspenseful tone stays the same throughout the film from the very beginning to the end. At the beginning the suspense starts to pick up around when the boy sees a group of people on the ground. Around the middle of the film it hit the climax of the most suspense when the boy was snatched up by one of the guys, when the camera did snapped away from the corner and then snapped back to the original position when the "bad guy" snatched the boy. After that the music a typical starts a suspense chase scene music until the very end. At the very end the suspense changes to a "someone's gonna get hurt" style, when the leader had the knife and the boy was grabbing for a rock to defend himself when the leader goes in for the deadly blow.
ReplyDelete3. This film relates to The Road by the barren emptiness. With all the trash and the look of abandonment, and ruins from the buildings and the road relates to The Road. Also how the main character is looking for food to survive, just like the father and boy in the book trying to survive and find food once they ran out. Finally the gang of boys that attack the boy in the film relate to the bad guys in the Road.
The tone the director created was discontent. The main character is always hiding, and running away. The tone was the same throughout the film.
ReplyDeleteThe director creates this tone by having energetic music, when the main character is running. And mysterious music when he was looking out the window. He also has no one speak during the whole film.
This film relate to the road because the world is all worn down in The Road which is the same as in the film. Also the man and the boy are always running to try to save themselves, which is what happened in the film.
The director creates a lonely tone. This tone changes throughout. At the beginning the tone is lonely, he unfolds the picture of his family and we watch his daily routine. The director uses different shots to create this lonely feeling. When we see the world from the kids perspective, like when he looks at the picture, we can really feel his loneliness. As the film goes on it changes, it is lonely until the first guy attacks him, then from that point on the tone is survival. Beginning to end he is surviving, but in the end he is literally fighting for his life. The director also includes different music when the tone changes. This film relates to the novel because This boy is surviving against the world and "bad guys." Also, He has memories of when the apocalypse started, how the film started. The Man also has memories of the days when the apocalypse started.
ReplyDeleteThe tone was sort of dreary but calm. However when the antagonists are introduced it takes on more of danger and threatening feel. The director used dark lighting & foreshadowing to create the tone. This film connects to The Road because the antagonists are cannibals (WHAT’S WITH ALL THE CANNIBALS!?) and the protagonist is a scavenger like the man and boy.
ReplyDeleteThe director creates a different tone in the beginning of the trailer than in the end.In the beginning, the tone was barren, gloomy, lonley, and a little depressing. In the middle and the end of the trailer the tone changes when the group of people come and attack the boy. The tone morphs into suspense and a little bit of a thrill.
ReplyDeleteIn movie, it is easier to create the tone rather than in a book. In this movie, the director created tone through the music, the colors, the setting, and the character. In the beginning, the music was slow, which created the lonely/gloomy tone. When he was searching the houses for food the music sped up a little bit leading up to the attackers showing up. When they showed up the music got faster to create the suspense.
This film relates in many ways to The Road. In the movie, the boy has to search for food in many different houses, and in many cases, he does not find any food. In The Road the man and the boy have to take risks to find food as well by searching other houses. Another similarity is that there are good people and there are bad people. The boy in the movie was one of the good guys because he did not go after the group of people walking around, but the group of guys were bad because they chased him down. In The Road there are good guys (the man and the boy) and there are bad guys which outnumber the good ones.
The tone at the beginning is very slow, lonely, and creepy but then when the guys find the kid he starts to run and the tone becomes more suspenseful and exhilarating. The Director creates the tone by not using dialogue this makes it so its all in the music choice, actors action, the setting or area they are in. This film relates to The road by they are both placed in a somewhat "broken" world where everything is destroyed and grim. It also relates to the novel because in the novel the father and son don't want to be seen by others because they never know what they might do.
ReplyDeleteI think the tone the author creates is hostile and depressing at the same time. In my opinion I do not think that it is the same tone throughout because it went from really depressing in the beginning to extremely hostile when he was getting chased. The author creates the tone of the film by limited dialogue, selection of music, the setting, and even the clothes the people are wearing. This short film relates to the Road because the setting was in a post apocalyptic world and just like the book, the enemy was set out to kill them, just like they wanted to kill this character.
ReplyDeleteThe director created a sort of sad, fearful and suspenseful tone. I think the director uses the music and the scenes to portray all these tones to help get their image through. In the beginning the director uses the memory before the apocalypse and turns out it was just a dream and him waking up from it then looking at the photo of what appears to be his family. Then it turns into a sort of fearful tone due to when he saw the group of people and hid from them while looking for food. and finally, being suspenseful the director used the music and the chasing scene. This short film relates to the book because they both have suspenseful journeys just by continuing on day by day and having constant memories of life before the apocalypse. They also have to protect themselves from other survivors because you can never trust strangers.
ReplyDeleteThe film has an overall suspenseful tone. If there was only one tone to pick for the whole film. However, it does sort of change at least once in the film. The first half, while the boy is walking through, it is almost calm, or tense. Then, once the other kids start to chase him, it gets very frantic. The director created the tone by using music, colors, and scenery to show the tone. The tense tone is shown with the sort of calm music, where the watchers was feeling uncomfortable because the music is too calm for what they're expecting. Then, once it gets frantic, the music is faster and the camera shakes more as the boys are all running. This film connects to the road for one obvious reason. One reason is that they both take place in the apocalypse. Another one is that the man and the boy both have to live in suspense and fear as they go through the road. They try to avoid getting attacked from the bad people, which they occasionally will run into.
ReplyDelete1)The tone the director creates is suspenseful. The whole time we're on our toes waiting for something scary or frightening to happen. The other tone is haunting. The buildings he's walking through are gray and gloomy
ReplyDelete2) The director creates the tone of the film by the camera positions. There's different scenes where there only of his hands or the back of his head which makes it quite frightening. The music in the background makes it anxious because you don't know what's going to happen next.
3)The film relates to the novel in many ways. In the novel they have to be careful because of other people, the man in the short film got caught by a group of men and almost killed. They also have to look for food which can be very dangerous due to the frantic heart beat of the boy.
The tone the director conveys in this clip is suspenseful or fearful. The tone is not the same throughout it changes a few times throughout the clip. Sometimes the the tone is calm, most times it is suspenseful. He conveys a suspenseful tone by making the "gang" chase the boy. The techniques he uses are adding the suspenseful music in the background. He also doesn't use dialog. You can almost see by the peoples facial expression whether they are scared or not. This relates to the novel because the man in the novel misses his wife just like the man in the clip misses his family. Also, in the novel the man is worried about running into people and when they see someone has been on the road they get frightened and all the sudden their guards go up even more. The man in the clip also has this feeling or problem. When he sees the "gang" he gets worried and scared and is very precocious as to if there see people around him or not. He keeps his guard up to make sure he is safe.
ReplyDeleteThe tone that the director creates at first is haunting because as the boy wakes up from a dream, he realises that he is alone and looks at his picture of probably his family. Another tone is anxious for when the boy is looking for food and making sure no one is around any corner. He is always keeping his eyes out. Toward the end it gets suspenseful for when he spots the guys and he knows he has to watch out. The director shows the tones by moving the camera around when they are on a chase also at the beginning he has the shot blur out. Also by the music, gives it that suspenseful. The short film relates to The Road by how both the boy in the film and the man/boy have to look for food but also watch out over every corner to make sure no one is coming. Also how barren each one is.
ReplyDeleteThe tone of this film was fearful. In the film the boy is always looking out for himself, peering over his shoulder and watching his own back. The setting, and music set the tone for this video. It keeps the same tone throughout the film because the boy is always fearful of his life. The director does a good job of setting the tone because his edits match the setting he picked.
ReplyDelete3. How does this film relate to the novel, The Road? Make at least TWO connections to the novel in your response.
ReplyDeleteThe director created more than one tone. In the beginning of the film its really depressing and looks gloomy and creepy where he is. In the middle and towards the end the tone is suspenseful as he's running away from the bad guys trying to survive and not get killed. The director creates a tone by using gloomy colors, suspenseful music, an abandoned town. He used the picture of the memory of his family. This film is related to the book The Road because although you can't visually see whats happening and what everything exactly looks like you can infer by the authors description that it in the book its very depressing, dark and gloomy. In the film its also depressing and dark. The film also relates to the book because in the book they man and the boy are trying to hide from the bad guys and its suspenseful and in the film they are running away from the bad guys.
The director creates a very desolate tone. He shows this by the destroyed building that the boy is living in and the houses with the busted out windows. The tone changed in the end because it went from a very desolate/alone type feel to a fearful tone when the people start chasing him.
ReplyDeleteThe director creates tone with music, he uses a very fast type of music when he's being chased and a suspenseful type of music when he's going through the house. He puts together music with different camera angles.
The film relates to the road in that they both are running from people and fighting to stay alive. Also they both are always looking for food.
1. The director of the short movie or trailer "Relic" the tone that he creates is suspenseful survival. No the tone changes 3 times during the whole thing.
ReplyDelete2. The director uses music to convey the tone he wants, and he also uses actions in the movie to convey the suspense. When the boys are chasing the kid, the music became really fast paced and you can basically get your adrenaline pumping from the suspense the movie is creating.
3. This movie connects to "The Road" by the setting and circumstances that the characters are in such as fighting for their lives and scavenging for food. The second way this movie connects to the book is that the use of language is very scarce. The book uses language, but it is maybe once in a while or it's a couple words here and there.
There are multiple tones throughout the short film “Relic”. In the first scene, the boy is simply laying lone, and it has a barren feel to it. He is in an empty, dirty room, and his life seems barren because he has nobody with him and he has no family anymore. The director makes it this because
ReplyDeleteThe second tone that appears is melancholic, because he is searching through the cupboards for food, and there is no music playing, until the sound effect when he sees the four men.
The third tone that appears is suspenseful. This is all throughout him being chased and when he is caught. The author uses music that kept the watcher on the edge of his/her seat and keeps them wanting to know what is going to happen.
This is like the novel because the boy and the man sleep in barren places like the boy. Also, the chase scene in “Relic” is like the scene in the novel when the man and the boy see the groups of people and they have to run.
1.) There are 3 tones that are portrayed in the film, lonesome, fearful, suspenseful. In the beginning of the clip when the boy is looking at the picture of his family it gives a really lonely tone. And then when the guy is in the apartments looking for food and the he sees the other people it is a very fearful tone. And lastly when the boy is about to get stabbed it is a very suspenseful tone.
ReplyDelete2.)The director uses many things to create these tones like the lighting having it kind of dark makes its very scary and fearful which adds to the tone. And the music he definitely uses the music to create tone like at the end the music started getting really fast and made it very suspenseful tone.
3.)This film very closely relates to the the book because they have all these tones in common. Like when the boy and the and the man see the bad guys coming in the truck it creates a very fearful and suspenseful tone just like in the film. Also when the father is looking at the picture of his wife you can feel how lonely he is just like the guy in the film.
The tone in the this whole film was hopelessness with the boy in the film almost losing his hope of food and for life. This is like "The Road from the running out of food and the almost losing a life to a group of bad men. The director creates the tone with the music and the setting .
