Maslow's Hierarchy at Work in The Road

Watch the film to review the levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs:

Find THREE examples of Maslow's Hierarchy at work in the pages you read for today.

  • Quote
  • Identify the need fulfilled or unfulfilled
  • Implications/Consequences of need fulfilled or unfulfilled

  1. 3 examples of Maslow's Hierarchy fulfilled within the pages that I read for homework was food and shelter when they find this place underground "Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots..." (Page138). Level 2 is fulfilled as the boy feels safe within the underground thing mentioning his trust in the place. "I wish we could live here." The boy must feel safe in this place if he is wanting to stay here instead of venture out again. Level 4 is fulfilled within the reading because they start to gain some confidence and realize that they aren't going to die as it says their goals of reaching the coast "Are we going to get there soon? Not real soon. Pretty soon." (156). Therefore, they are inferring that they know they aren't going to die and that they are headed in the right direction.

  2. One part in the book is page 140 when the man and the boy find a whole underground storage place full of food and all the necessities one may need and this is like the first tier because the found food and shelter. It can also be related to the second tier because they feel safe within the underground storage place. Then the third tier can be related to page 161 when the find the old man and the little boy wants to help him and the father agrees this is like the third tier because they make a friendship also the boy and the man have each other so that there is the family part of the third tier. Confidence sort of come into play on page 144 when the father thinks " He had been ready to die and now that he wasn't going to he had to think about that" this shows a little bit of confidence in staying alive even when he thought he wasn't going to.

  3. "He led the boy out into the yard trailing the black smoke from the lamp. He put the pistol in his belt.." (Pg.137) This is an example of the second tier because the lamp, and pistol make it easier for them to see to be able to protect themselves. "He turned and leaned and kissed the child on the forehead." (Pg.137) This shows family building because they're bond is growing, and shows how much he cares for the boy. This is a clear example of tier 3, friendship/family. "He put the boy to bed in the bunk and smoothed his filthy hair on the pillow and covered him with blankets." (Pg.141) This would fit the category of tier 1. This would go under the food, and shelter because it shows that they have pillows, and blankets.

  4. "He put the pistol in his belt and picked up the spade and began to chop the hasp out of the plywood." This is an example of tier 2 of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs because the pistol provides the man and boy with safety. The second example of a tier is "Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Canned hams. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water in ten gallon plastic jerry jugs." The man finding all of this food and water is an example of tier one of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs because he found food. He and the boy need food and water for survival. “He put the boy to bed in the bunk and smoothed his filthy hair on the pillow and covered him with the blankets.” This is an example of the third tier because this shows friendship and family. The man cares for and acts like a normal father in this situation, he shows care even though they are in this apocalypse. He tucks him in as any father would on a normal night. This shows the love the man feels for the boy.

  5. "Chile, corn, stew, soup, spaghetti sauce. The richness of a vanished world" (139) The need that was fulfilled was hunger. When people are not hungry, they are happy, energetic, and willing to push on, but when people are hungry, they are fatigued, bitter, and unwilling to try any longer.

"Crates upon crates of canned goods." (138) This shows security of resources. All of these resources cannot possibly be eaten by one group of people, so if they ever need resources, they could come back and get some. If they do not have the security of resources they have to constantly look for food and water, but now that they do, they can focus on other things knowing that they always have it as a back up plan.

"Dear people, thank you for all this food and stuff. We know that you saved it for yourself and if you were here we wouldn't eat it no matter how hungry we were and we're sorry that you didn't get to eat it and we hope that you're safe in heaven with God." This shows respect for others. If they didn't have respect for others then they would be just like the bad guys, and that is what they've been avoiding the whole time. When respect for others in fulfilled, then you can have relations with other and prosper together.

  6. One of the three examples of Maslow's Hierarchy that are in this book is Love/Belonging, and the reason why I think this is because in the book it says "They helped the old man to his feet and handed him his cane. He didnt weigh a hundred pounds. he stood looking about uncertainly. the man took the tin from him and slung it into the woods. The old man tried to hand him the cane but he pushed it away. When did you eat last? he said?" This shows that he cares for the old man and trying to help him out. The second example is safety and in the book the man and the boy find a bunker for them to stay in. The man decides to stay here because he knows that it makes the boy feel safe, and secure. The last example is self actualization, and the book shows this by the man making the bunker for living.

  7. In the book the father and the son finally find some food which relates to tier 1 of Maslows hierarchy of breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, and excretion. In the book it says “Pears. That says pears” (139) this quote shows how the father are really hungry and honestly excited about the thought of being able to eat. In the book the son also creates a relationship with the boy they met which goes with tier 3 of friendship, family, and sexual intimacy. In the book the little boy says “I wish that little boy was with us” (131) which shows the level of friendship between the boy and one of the main character. Lastly in the book the father makes fake bullets which increases their self-confidence and respect from others which is like tier 4 of self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, and respect by others. In the book it says “he whittled fake bullets from a tree branch with his knife” (149) this will make him feel better about their chances and more likely to get respect if people think they could be a threat

  8. On page 138 the boy and the man meet the first step of Maslow's Hierarchy when they found the bunker full of food. When they made this discovery they had enough food to support themselves so that they were no longer hungry "Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans apricots." as well as supplying them with shelter from the weather above ground shown on page 153 "In the night he was wakened by the muted patter of rain on the mattress over the door above them". They also met the second step of the hierarchy because they were safe for a while in the bunker because they were locked underground and the man camouflaged the hatch of the bunker when the man "dragged some of the furniture our onto the lawn. Then he dragged out a mattress and laid it over the hatch", they also had full control of their food supply. The boy met the third step of the hierarchy when he prayed to the people who left the food and supplies on page 146 saying "'Dear people, thank you for all this food and stuff", showing respect of others.

  9. 1) ”Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water in ten gallon plastic jerry jugs.” (Pg. 138). Tier 1 of the physiological level is fulfilled in this passage. They find an abundance of food and water. This is something they have not come across before. They were beginning to lose hope and thinking they might starve to death but not they can keep surviving. The fourth tier is also fulfilled. By finding the food they have achieved a lot and gained some confidence. Some complications they could have are getting too comfortable or confident. If they have are walking around with a cart full of food someone might come along and try to take it from them. They still need to watch out for people, just because they have the food does not mean everything is okay.
    2) ”Do you think we should thank the people? The people? The people who gave us all this. Well.Yes, I guess we could do that.....Dear people thank you for all this food and stuff. We know That you saved it for yourself and if you were here we wouldn’t eat it no matter how hungry we were and were sorry that you didn’t get to eat it. and we hope that you’re safe in heaven with God.” (Pg. 145) The fourth tier is fulfilled from this passage. He has respect for other or specifically the people that left them the food, water and shelter. Without these goods they might not have been able to live so by getting the security of having food and shelter he can move higher up on the pyramid. The consequences that come along with the fulfillment of the fourth tier is being too thankful. If they focus on how thankful they are then they might not focus on what is most important which safety and having food.
3)”While the boy slept he sat on the bunk and by the light of the lantern he whittled fake bullets from a tree branch with his knife, fitting them carefully into the empty bores of the cylinder and then whittling again.” (Pg.149) The second tier is trying to be fulfilled because he wants the boy to feel safe as well as make other people think they have security. The boy is often very scared about new places so the father wants him to feel safe. This could leave a burden on them because they do not have real bullets to protect themselves so if someone came along they would not be able to protect themselves.

  10. “What is all this stuff, Papa?
It’s food. Can you read it?
    Pears. hat says pear.
Yes. Yes it does. Oh yes it does.” (138)
On page 138, the man and the boy find a underground hatch filled with food. Th fulfills their need of food found of the first tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The consequences of having all this food is that someone else will want the food that they have.

“ He put the boy to bed in the bunk and smoothed his filthy hair on the pillow and covered him with blankets.” (141)
On page 141, the man puts the boy to bed in an actual bed. This fulfills the bottom tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. The problem with sleeping in a bed is that if they ever have to leave the bunker and sleep outside on the ground and be freezing, the boy will remember how sleeping in that bunk bed felt like. The boy has been living in this world ever since he was born and he has never missed sleeping in a bed because he had not really ever slept in a bed. He does not have that memory of sleeping in a bed so he does not miss it.

“ Do you think we should thank the people?
    The people?
The people who gave us all this.
Well. Yes, I guess we could do that.” (145)

“Dear people, thank you for all this food and stuff. We know you saved it for yourself and if you were here we wouldn’t eat it no matter how hungry we were and we’re sorry that you didn’t get to eat it and we hope that you’re safe in heaven with God.” (146)
This fulfills part of the esteem (tier 4) tier in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This is because the boy is respecting the people who made this bunker and thanking them for the food that they left them. Even though it was not intended for them, the boy is thankful for the people. He respects them.

  11. 3 example that I have found of Maslow's hierarchy in the book is on page 135. It gives a passage of "The man dropped the shovel and put his arms around him. Come on,he said, lets go sit on the porch and rest a while." and with this passage they full filled the safety and family implication. The next passage on page 135 is "He found a beer bottle and an old rag of curtain and he tore an edge from the cloth and stuffed it down the neck of the bottle with a coat hanger. This is our new lamp, he said." The implications have been full filled by the safety of the light in this scene. My last example is of food. The passage that explains this is on page 141. "They sat side by side and ate the can of pears. Then they ate a can of peaches. They licked the spoons and tipped the bowl and drank the sweet syrup. THis is full filled by the implication because they found food they were looking for.

  12. “Oh my God.
    What is it Papa?
Come down. Oh my God. Come down.
Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Canned hams. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water in ten gallon plastic jerry jugs.”(138). This leaves Maslows hierarchy of needs under Physiological fulfilled because they have oxygen, food, water, and sleep.
“Dear people, thank you for all this food and stuff. We know that you saved it for yourself and if you were here we wouldnt eat it no matter how hungry we were and we’re sorry, that you didnt get to eat it and we hope that you’re safe in heaven with God.”(146) This fulfills Esteem in Maslow’s hierarchy because the boy is praising the people who have left the bunker there, and did not survive.
“He washed his dirty matted hair and bathed him with the soap and sponges. He drained away the filthy water he sat in and laved fresh warm water over him from the pan and wrapped him shivering in a towel and wrapped him again in a blanket.”(147). This fulfills the level 2 on Maslow’s Hierarchy because they are able to take care of their health.

  13. "chile, corn, stew, soup, spaghetti sauce" This shows the physiological tier that was fulfilled. The consequences of this being fulfilled well they could get tired from eating plus now they will have to carry more food and they will be.

"the bunker was walled with walled with concrete block" The need of safety was fulfilled here because they found a very good shelter. The consequences of this is one they would have to defend this area plus now they could be easily found.

"He Started to descend down the stair but then he turned and leaned and kissed the boy on his forehead" This shows love and belonging which was a need that got meet here it shows how the father loves and cares for the boy. The consequences of this are that now the boy should really know that man loves him and maybe it will boost them giving both a little happiness

  14. 1. "I know your scared, that's ok." The boy is still scared which is part of esteem in the hierarchy. They have food and safety and each other but when it comes to esteem it still seems hopeless and scary.
    2. "I found everything, EVERYTHING." The father found tons of food and supplies which was literally heaven for them, I am relating this to the hierarchy because they finally have everything, they have tons of food now, they have health and security of body, their relationship is getting better because of the find, and with all the food they found they have tons of confidence and happiness now which now allows them to go to self- actualization which is great!
    3. "Maybe he thinks were not real." The old man on the road is obviously starving and since he is starving he cannot reach any other level of the hierarchy of needs and since he is starving he is absolutely lost by not reaching the higher levels, the boy is not sure if the man thinks they are real or not because he is lost.

  15. "Here. You put the butter on your biscuits. Like this." (145). This shows that not only is the food aspect of the hierarchy fulfilled giving them their strength back. It also fulfills the relationship tier as the man teaches and bonds with the boy strengthening each others' loyalty to each other and allow them to rise further up on the hierarchy. “The grocery cart was in the shed. Not likely that anyone would travel the road today.” (155). Here the man feels secured the rain should keep travelers at bay and the cart is hidden in the shed out of sight. This allows the man to relax a little and properly sort through the contents of the bunker for things to take.

  16. The first tier of Maslow's Hierarchy is fulfilled when they eat the pears " These will be the best pears you ever tasted, he said. The best. Just you wait." The need fulfilled here is a physiological need that of hunger. The third tier is fulfilled when the boy says they should thank the people who stocked the bunker "Do you think we should thank the people?" they feel like this because they are loving and affectionate and their needs have been fulfilled. The second tier is fulfilled as well as the fourth " Do you think they'll find us? No. They won't find us. They might find us. No they won't. They won't find us" here the man obviously feels safe and i believe that he's cocky or confident about it and he base reattached this state because all the other tiers are for filled.

  17. "Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots,. Canned ham. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water in ten gallon plastic jerry jugs."
This quote from the first pier is breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, excretion. This quote is a pefect reflection of the first peir because they now have food and water.
"The bunker was walled with concrete block." This quote is a perfect reflection of 2nd pier which is safety. They are safe in this bunker with food and a concrete block wall for protection.
"They would want us to. Just like we would want them to." This is a perfect reflection of the 3rd pier which is friendship and family. I. This point in the book they are safe, have food and water, and they are together as father and son.

  18. In the road they are almost completed with all of the tiers of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs because they already have food/shelter, safety, friendship and family, and self-esteem/confidence. They find food and shelter when they stumble upon a door that leads down to a bunker that was filled with canned food “what would you like for supper. Pears. Good choice. Pears it is.” In the second tier the father and son show their love for each other and this relates to tier 2 and 3 “They licked the spoon and tipped the bowls and drank rich sweet syrup. They looked at each other. One more. I don’t want you to get sick. I won't get sick. You haven't eaten in a long time. I know. Okay. The self esteem and confidence tier was also related to these pages when the father finds bullets but they don’t fit his gun and he looks for the gun that they do fit but he doesn’t find it so he makes makeshift bullets out of wood to provide a sense of confidence in the son so that he thinks he is safe. “He shaped the ends with the knife and sanded them with soot until they were the color of lead. When he had all five of them done he fitted them to the bore and snapped the cylinder shut and turned the gun and looked at it”.

  19. "Chile, corn, stew, soup, spaghetti sauce. The richness of a vanished world" (139) The man and boy had been suffering from hunger for ages and now their hunger level of the hierarchy has been completely restored. This was exactly what the two of them needed and is beneficial

"Crates upon crates of canned goods." (138) For the man and boy their second tier of the hierarchy is fulfilled because now he knows they'll have food reliably for a long time. Th is is definitely beneficial to them both

"Dear people, thank you for all this food and stuff. We know that you saved it for yourself and if you were here we wouldn't eat it no matter how hungry we were and we're sorry that you didn't get to eat it and we hope that you're safe in heaven with God." This is an example of the esteem level of the hierarchy because the boy is respecting the people who stocked up on all the food. Its definitely beneficial to see the boy was able to respect people he hadn't met before like that.

  20. "He'd been ready to die and now he wasn't going to die and he had to think about that"(144). This is an example of the Safety tier of Maslow's Hierarchy. The boy now feels safe that he won't die and it could also be in the self-esteem tier because he knows that he himself is healthy enough to survive longer then they expected. A consequence of this may be that they run into trouble that they can not handle. Also, the boy may see some more terrifying things and be scared for life. "Crates upon crates of canned goods"(138). This is the psychological needs tier. The boy and the man now know that they have a basic need of food which they can eat and stay somewhat healthy. A consequence of this is that they now have more stuff to carry, and it may take them longer to travel with the amount of food they will need to take with them to survive. "Are we going to get there soon? Not real soon. Pretty soon. We're not going as the crow flies. Because crows don't have to follow roads? Yes"(156). This meets the self esteem tier and safety tier in the fact that this is an example of the boy trusting the man again. He now has hope in getting to the south. A consequence of this is now the boy and the man will be in better spirits throughout the trip and make smarter decisions because they won't be bickering as much.

  21. 1. Safety- One example of Maslow's Hierarchy was when the father and the son found the hidden underground bunker. It was concealed underground and no one would know about it unless they were looking for it. To ensure their safety, "[...] he dragged out a mattress and laid it over the hatch and from inside he pulled it up over the plywood and carefully lowered the door so that the mattress covered it competently" (149). Finding this shelter fulfilled the father and sons need for protection from the outside world.

    2. food- Another example of Maslow's Hierarchy was when the father and son went down into the bunker and found food and supplies to sustain their needs for a long time. The father is overjoyed by his findings, he says, "I found everything. Everything. Wait till you see” (139). Finding this overabundance of food fulfills their physiological need for food and energy while lifting their spirits.

    3. Self esteem/ Creativity- My last example of Maslow's Hierarchy was when the father whittled the fake bullets out of the tree branch. When the father finished he admired his creative work, "Even this close the gun looked as if it was loaded and he laid it by and got up to feel the legs of the jeans steaming above the heater" (149). This creation boost the fathers confidence in himself because he was able to utilize his surroundings.
