We got one eye watching you
And one eye on what to do
So be careful who it is you're talking to
They got one eye watching you
One on what to do
So be careful what it is you're trying to do
And be careful when you're walking into view
Just be careful when you're walking into view
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on...
We got one eye watching you
And one eye what to do
So be careful cause' nothing they say is true
Don't believe a word
It's just us against the world
And we just gotta turn up to be heard
Hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world
Hear those crocodiles ticking, they go ticking 'round the world
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
And one eye on what to do
So be careful who it is you're talking to
They got one eye watching you
One on what to do
So be careful what it is you're trying to do
And be careful when you're walking into view
Just be careful when you're walking into view
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on...
We got one eye watching you
And one eye what to do
So be careful cause' nothing they say is true
Don't believe a word
It's just us against the world
And we just gotta turn up to be heard
Hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world
Hear those crocodiles ticking, they go ticking 'round the world
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh oooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Write a minimum 100 word response in which you SUMMARIZE the message of the song and make a specific reference to the novel--USE A QUOTE FROM THE LYRICS AND THE ROAD (pages 109-135) IN YOUR RESPONSE.
In the road the man keeps telling the boy "no we aren't going to die." In the song Major Minus it says "don't believe a word." This is important because the boy knows eventually he is going to die and the man just keeps denying it to him because he doesn't want to scare him. Although after a few times asking the boy can finally get it out of him. It is becoming harder and harder for the boy to trust the man all and all because the man is becoming snappy and the boy is becoming weak. He knows death is upon them.
ReplyDeleteThis song is very much like the Road by McCarthy in many ways. One line in the song says" don't believe a word its just us against the world " this refers to the man and the boy because in the road its just the boy and and them who are only the "good guys" for example in the book the boy asks the man if they are going to survive and the man says yes and the boy says because they are the good guys carrying the fire and the man agrees. Also in the song it says " so be careful because nothing what they say is true, this is very much like the book because again the man is always telling to boy that they are going to survive and being hopeful for the boy but in reality the man know that there is no way that they will be able to survive for long but he tries to be hopeful for the boys sake.
ReplyDeleteThe message of this song is to emphazise that when the song says that it's us against the world that the man and the boy are against all the bad people living in the same world as them. The tone of this song is mysterious and skeptical as the song says "got one eye on the road and one on you" which sounds kind of creepy and weird. This is relatable to a scene within the book where the boy and man escape from the house before being caught and continue to search the road to be sure that none of the bad people are coming and the one eye on you part is related to the man who always is keeping an eye on the boy.
ReplyDeleteThe message of this song is that they are always watching you as well as warning you to be cautious, giving the song a skeptical tone. This is like the road because the man and the boy are always watching out for the "bad guys" who are refereed to in the song as "crocodiles".in one of the scenes that we read, the man and the boy stumble across a house in which they find a bunch of people that the bad guys had captured for food and had to run out of the house because the bad guys were coming back and lay low in the leaves behind dead bushes at the house, watching and waiting to see when it is safe enough to leave.
ReplyDeleteI think the message in this song was that they want to make sure that you are warned and that you always have "one eye on the Road". They are referring to the road in the song to the road as in the book. The book has been constantly trying to survive and they song sends the message that no one is telling the truth and in the book " The Road" the father says that they will survive but when its time for the boy had to put the gun in his mouth and if he were to pull the trigger then the father would have lied.
ReplyDeleteThe song has good references to the book. I think a tone word to describe the song is skeptical. The song says "So be careful cause' nothing they say is true.: This relates to the book because in the book the son often asks the father if they are going to die. The father always tells the son that they are not going to die which is very unlikely. Specifically in the book it says, "You think we're going to die don't you? I don't know. We're not going to die. Okay. But you don't believe me. Why do you think we're going to die? I don't know." Conversations like this happen between the father and son a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song is definitely referring to the road like the bad guys watching them and how it's them versus the apocalyptic world. Also how they compare the ticking crocodile from Peter Pan where the crocodile would tick like a clock until it eats Hook the term of the crocodiles ticking around the world means that it was the count down to the world ending. We can all agree (except paul) that this song really relates to the Road. In the Road there are multiple quotes mostly by the father saying. "Hide they see us." and the song reminded me of the bandits and bad guys "keeping an eye on them." In conclusion this song really relates to all the roads ways.
ReplyDeleteThe song "Major Minus" Message is that everything people are always watching you and that they need to be watchful also that the people in the song are against the world. The "Road" which "inspired" this song can "connect" to song in many ways. One of which is when it says "one eye on the road one eye on you" This connects specifically to the scene where the man fashions the mirror to the cart. This connects because its says road and the man and the boy are walking on the road so it must mean they are connected like i cant see how its not.
ReplyDeleteThe song "Major Minus" has relation to the road because there is perfect relation why the song could have influenced the song. The line "be careful when you are walking into view" is a perfect connection to the book for when they man woke up to seeing men coming towards them down the word. "Something woke him. He looked down at the boy and when he looked back toward the road the first of them were already coming into view." (60) In the song they referenced this scene perfectly because it stays to walk out of view of others.
ReplyDeleteThis song by Coldplay relates to The Road in the sense that it is saying all the survival skills that the man and the boy use while on the road. The song says “and be careful when you’re walking into view.” This relates to The Road because when on the road, the boy and the man need to be careful because there are others on the road. The a line in the song also says “Don’t believe a word it’s just us against the world.” This relates to The Road because it is only the man and the boy and everyone else is one of the “bad guys”. Also they can’t trust anyone else on the road, but the bo also can’t trust what the man is telling him. The boy always says
ReplyDelete“You think we’re going to die, don’t you?
I don’t know.
okay.
But you don’t believe me.
I don’t know.
Why do you think we’re going to die?
I don’t know.
Stop saying I don’t know.
Okay.”
This shows how the man always tells the boy that they are fine and that they aren’t going to die but the reality is that they are not well off.
The message of this song is very untrustworthy. The song sounds skeptical and untrusting. In the song it says, "And be careful when you're walking into view
ReplyDeleteJust be careful when you're walking into view" I can connect this to the road because the man and the boy are always careful when in sight. When they walk down the road they constantly have an eye on where they're going and where they're coming from. "Got one eye on the road" When the man and boy are in sight they are careful to sleep in ditches or other places where they won't be seen and they ditched the cart and bag in ditches or behind stuff before going out into more open places, like the gas station earlier in the book.
The song Major Minus has a suspenseful melodic tone to it. The song portrays an uncomfortable feeling that sends a shiver up your back, that you being watched. Major Minus is very similar with its suspenseful tone to the Road with a few of the lyrics. For instance "Its just us against the world," this can relate to the father and the boy because the father doesn't trust any stranger they will meet on the road. And he will try to avoid any contact and fend for him and the boy. Just like on page 110-112 when the father and and the boy goes down the stairs in the locked room. When he sees all those people in need (some really sick, others with missing limbs) he just turns and runs. He doesn't want to help because he feels like he will get into trouble helping. Another quote in the song that relates to the book is, "Hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world." This refers to the "bad guys" that travel in gangs and will kill, enslave, or possibly eat the people they find trying to survive on their own.
ReplyDeleteThe Coldplay song Major Minus, can relate to The Road because in the song lyrics they wrote, "Got one eye on the road" which is similar to the man and the boy. It is difficult for them because they always have to watch ahead and behind them. That is why the motorcycle mirror has been helpful so they and see behind them while facing forward. In the book. When they were searching for food in the house they saw "coming across the field toward the house were four bearded men and two women. He grabbed the boy by the hand. Christ, he said. Run. Run." They don't always need to have their eye on the Road, but wherever they are they need to keep their eye out for their safety.
ReplyDeleteThere are many things you can connect from the music to the book The Road. In the song it says, “They got one eye watching you, One on what to do, So be careful what it is you're doing”. This connects with The Road very well because when the boy and the man travel on the road, they have to be careful what they do and where they go because there is always something or someone watching them which this quote supports this reason, “ We need to get off the road. Why, Papa? Someone’s coming. Is it bad guys? Yes. I am afraid so. They could be good guys. Couldn’t they? He didn’t answer. He looked at the sky out of the old habit but there was nothing to see. What are we going to do, Papa? Let’s go. Can we go back to the fire? No. Come on. We probably don't have much time. I'm really hungry. I know. What are we going to do? We have to hole up. Get off the road” (103). The tone of both the lyrics and the quote is very suspenseful. They both show that it can be very frustrating that you have to be careful what you do and where you go on the road.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics "We got one eye watching you And one eye on what to do So be careful who it is you're talking to". This connects to the book because they always have to be careful who they talk to and meet. Reason is because when they went into the shed, they found those naked men and women hiding in dust and when they went to leave, they were being chased by a woman and two men with beards. When the man and boy were running, they crossed the road and laid on the forest ground.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the message of this song is one that is stating "It's just us against the world" that you can't trust any one. I feel that this song has a strong and powerful connection to the book. "Got one eye on the road and one on you" this line from the song directly relates back to the book because the father is constantly looking behind them and telling the boy I'll keep you safe. The man tells the boy that he can't trust any one that theyll tell him anything "So be careful cause' nothing they say is true" .
ReplyDeleteColdplay's song Major Minus shows many clear connections to The Road, in particular in the very first stanza. As follows: "We got one eye watching you. And one eye what to do." In relation to the Man, he always has got an eye on his son. Being sure to take care of him like when, "He carried him across the field, stopping to rest each fifty counted steps"(p.117) when the boy was too weak to carry even his own weight. The next line connects to how the man observes how his son, "looked like something out of a death camp. Starved, exhausted, sick with fear."(p.117) Telling the readers that the father is watching, observing, caring for his son completely.
ReplyDeleteThis song connects to my The Road by talkiing about survival. When they sing "So be careful 'cause nothing they say is true" is about not trusting people or the others. Also it talks about a predator and how they say "Got one eye on the road and one eye watching you" could be the man watching the road and watching the boy. It's getting harder and harder for him to balance the saftey of himself and his son and all the while, catching the road.
ReplyDelete"A quarter mile down the road he stopped and looked back. We're not thinking, he said. We have to go back" pg. 7
Deletethis song is a lot like the road because when in the songs it says "Got one eye on the road and one on you" this reminds me of how the father always has one eye on the road and one eye on his son. Which to me means he's always looking out for his son but at the same time he's always scouting for dangers on this dangerous road they travel. "What if he doesn't have a Papa? There are people there. They were just hiding." (85) this is the father looking out and being cautious about possible dangers.
ReplyDeleteThe message is about how someone is facing the word with someone they might love. Coldplay's song has many connections to The Road, the first one is "And be careful when you're walking into view" In the book when the man is always worried when they get on the road, someone might come. How he was so weak, they had to sleep on the road and he was waking up every minute to grab his pistol, just in case someone came. Also when it says "Got one eye on the road and one on you" it's talking about the man who always has an eye on the road and the eye on the boy. The man and boy were walking along the road " after a while he rose and walked out into the road. He looked back at the boy. Come on, he said."
ReplyDeleteThis song does really closely relate to the book because the song is about saying how its us against the world it relates to how its the boy and man against the world. Also in general the song really relates to the boy and the mans relationship. For example in the song it says “Don't believe a word” this can relate to how the boy shouldn't believe his dad when he says “ I wont leave you” this is a lie because the man knows he is going to die and this means leaving the boy. So the boy shouldn't believe the father.
ReplyDeleteThe song Major Minus has many connections to the book The Road. Even in the first line there is a clear connection, "We got one eye watching you. And one eye what to do." In the book the man is always cautious and looking out for anything and anyone "Clamped to the handle of the cart was a chrome motorcycle mirror that he used to watch the road behind him." As well as in the song one of the lines is "It's just us against the world" this is almost identical to the book because the father and the son are fighting to survive but also fighting other people.
ReplyDeleteThe song Major Minus relates to the book The Road because they both have the same message. " got one eye on the road and one on you ". In The Road, the father is trying to survive with his son. They're trying to survive in the bitter cold with temperatures at a low brisk. " so when are you going to talk to me again? I'm talking now. Are you sure. Yes. Okay. " (52) This quote from the book explains how the father can't keep pay attention to his son all the time. He has to focus on where they are headed or else they would be dead. They're in a very dangerous situation and need to focus on where they are headed.
ReplyDeleteIn the song Major Minus, they talk a lot about surviving and pushing forward. Part of the chorus in the song is, “Got one eye on the road and one on you.” This makes a clear connection to the book, The Road, because in the first chapter on page six it says, “Clamped to the handle of the cart was a chrome motorcycle mirror that he used to watch the road behind him.” The man does this so he could constantly be watching himself and the boy where ever they were going. Major Minus also has the lyrics, “Its just us against the world.” The Road is all about the boy and the man, and the man always thinks its him and the boy and thats it, they are the only ones out there and will do anything to survive. The overall message of this song is to trust no one except for the people who are the closest to you. The people that you need to care for especially when they are you child.
ReplyDelete"Major Minus" written by Coldplay is very similar to Cormac McCarthy's book. One particular thing I noticed was in the song when the lyrics read "We got one eye watching you
ReplyDeleteAnd one eye what to do
So be careful cause' nothing they say is true". This reminds me of almost every single page when the boy asks" Do you think we're going to die, don't you?" (pg. 100) and the father always answers him"I don't know"(pg 100) or " We're not going to die" (pg 100) Yet with both of them becoming so weak, sick, and tired the father is giving up his hope slowly but lies to the boy to keep his spirits up but also to bring the boy hope.
I think that this song is song is pretty relate-able to the book. The song is basically saying how the father and boy are constantly on the run and you should always watch your back. "Just be careful when you're walking into view" is a pretty important lyric in the song because it relates to the quote "If they came down the drive they would see him running through the trees with the boy." (p.112) This really tells the readers that even one false slip up could put the boy and the man's life in jeopardy.
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song is having someone going against the world with you, when it says "Its just against the world" its relating to the man and the boy and how they are on there own in the world. "Just be careful what you're walking into view" thats saying you have to be aware where you are and who is there. I think the tone of this is skeptical because in the song it says,” So be careful because nothing that say is true. In the book it says, “"You think we're going to die don't you? I don't know. We're not going to die. Okay. But you don't believe me. Why do you think we're going to die? I don't know." He says to the boy that they are not going to die but they will eventually he doesn't want the boy to worry about that.
ReplyDeleteColdplay's Major Minus has connections to The Road in many places. One of these references is when they say "Dont believe a word". In the Road, there is a conversatoin between the two saying “You think we’re going to die, don’t you? I don’t know. okay. But you don’t believe me." This shows that the boy always thinks they are going to die and doesnt believe his father when he says no.
ReplyDeleteThe messige of this song is realy that to be carfule. it constiantly refers to the fact that some one has an eye on your and that you have to have an eye on something you are trying to protect. and this is something that is always true in the book. the man is constantly afrade of these peaple the blood cults and the road rat,s who are roaming the coutry and are all around him and he has to avode them becase thay will kill him and his boy. as well he has to wach his young boy becase he can run off and do something dangeris and is bit of a give away becase he,s not as aware as the man is and can leave more mark,s that lead to him. this can be saported bye evedence from the book (page 109) Off to one side a small wagon with rubber tires. all these things he saw but did not see" this qote shows that you always have to be on gard in the book becase the things you dont notice can be the death of you like in the song ware it says "So be careful what it is you're trying to do And be careful when you're walking into view" it,s spelling it out that you need to be care full with what you do and when your walking into view
ReplyDeleteThe book "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy and the song can be easily connected. In the song he sings "Just be careful when walking into view." This can apply to the book because the boy's father gives him a gun to protect himself just incase he gets spotted by someone. "He took the boy's hand and pushes the revolver into it." (112) I believe this was a good idea because he can protect himself easily.
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song is about "one eye on the road," which means looking at the road ahead, looking toward the future, and "one eye on you," which means looking at the people in front of you, the people you are going to share this future with, and the people you love. In The Road, the Man's priority is getting them to a safer, warmer place to live, to start over. "When he woke in the woods in the dark of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him." looking at him, preparing for the journey ahead.
ReplyDeleteThe message of this song is very warning, it says “be careful who it is you’re talking to”, as if who you are caught talking to could decide your fate. It is a very untrusting song because it says not to trust anyone and be very cautious through everything. He says “I don’t know. They’re on the move. It’s not a good sign” (McCarthy 92) and the “they” is the same as in the song. The “they” is the bad guys, the one that would hunt and kill the man and the boy if they were ever caught. It displays a grim tone.
ReplyDeleteThe messages of the song and the novel are alike in many ways. In the song it says "i got one eye on the road and one on you" you can infer that this quote from this song is about the father saying hes got one eye on whats happening around him and the other eye watching his son making sure hes safe. The message of this song is expressing trust, who you can and can't trust. This relates to the book because in the book it was talking about how they were in the house and how the man has one eye on the boy and the other one watching the house. "They pushed out through the back door, the boy hanging on to him" shows how he was watching both the boy and everything happening in the world.
ReplyDeleteThis displays a anxious tone because they have to like hide and not go into the road and not believe what they say this makes an anxious tone of having to worry.
ReplyDeleteThe song "Major Minus" shows many connections to the road. "Got one eye on the road and one eye watching you" and "Then he
ReplyDeletejust sat there holding the binoculars and watching the ashen daylight congeal over the land."(p1) are one connection because the man is watching the horizon for any dangers when the song also refers to watching the road for any incoming danger. These are one of the many connections the song makes to the book, "The Road"
i think the line "hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world hear hear those crocodile ticking, they go ticking round the world” means that that like in peter pan the crocodile who ate the clock ticks when he is near by and then captain hook knows there is danger near by. In the book whenever you hear a noise there is most likely danger near by. also when he says “Got one eye on the road and one on you” i connect that to the part when Cormac McCarthy says “ill find us some flint. ive been looking. and we’ve still got the little bottle of gasoline. okay. are you cold? im okay” (127). this is shows that he is looking to make sure that he is making sure that the kid is okay and is safe.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics "And be careful when you're walking into view." from the song connect to the book when the man gives the boy the gun and says "If they find you you are going to have to do it. Do you understand? Shh. No crying. Do you hear me? You know how to do it." because he is telling him that it is vital that he isn't seen. The part in the song when it says "Hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world." connects to the same part in the book because in Peter Pan the crocodile was found by Captain Hook because he ate a clock. Finally in the song when the lyrics say "Got one eye on the road and one on you," that is what the man is doing the whole time during the book.
ReplyDeleteI think that the message of the song is like the book The Road because like in the lyric "It's just us against the world" its just like The Road because the father and the son are alone and are trying to survive, "Just wait here, he said. Im going with you. I thought you were scared. I am scared. Okay. Just stay close behind me." the boy and man might be alone but the man loves the boy and the boy trusts and loves the boy so that is what is keeping them going
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song "Major Minus" is that you can't trust anybody and you always need to be aware of your surrounding. I think the song really connects with the book "The Road" a lot. A line from the song is "So be careful cause' nothing they say is true" connects to the book because in the book the boy always wants to help people they see on the way but the man won't let him because the man thinks they may take their stuff or kill them. An example from the book is "The burned man had fallen over and at that distance you couldn't even tell what it was . I'm sorry, he said. But we have nothing to five him. No way to help him. I'm sorry of what happened to him but we can't fix it." This quote really shows how the man doesn't want to help the man even though the boy really wants to because nobody can be trusted.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics "Hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world" connects to the boy and the man because they are on their death clock basically just waiting to die. It also really connects because the worlds clock has already stopped basically. "the clocked stopped at 1:17" is an example displaying the world ending and connects to the crocodiles clock in his stomach.
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song Major Minus and the book The Road is that they both relate to lack of trust/honesty. The lyrics that most certainly connects the song and the book is "Don't believe a word" because in the book their is a conversation between the boy and father "You think we’re going to die, don’t you? I don’t know. okay. But you don’t believe me." It became apparent to me that the boy has a strong belief that he is going to die, and the father try's not to agree.
ReplyDeleteIn The Road the man and the boy are always vigilant and never trust anyone else. "We need to get out of the road. why papa? someone's coming is it bad guys?" They are always staying vigilant and think everyone they hear coming down the road are bad guys whether they really are or not. Just like in this song they say "they have one eye on the road and the other on you".
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song is that survival is key and that you can only way to achieve survival is to be with someone with so that you are able to face the rest of the world. We can see a connection between the song and the book when the lyrics say "We got one eye watching you. And one eye on what to do. So be careful who it is you're talking to. They got one eye watching you. One on what to do. So be careful what it is you're trying to do. And be careful when you're walking into view. Just be careful when you're walking into view" and this connects with the book for the father is always telling the boy to be careful and not trust anyone they encounter which we can see when states "They came upon themselves in a mirror and he almost raised the pistol. It's us, Papa, the boy whispered. It's us."
ReplyDeleteThere are many connections between the song and the lyrics of the song major minus by cold play. In the song it says "us against the world." They don't use any names in the book and in the song "the boy looked away and said papa" that is a comparison about how they don't use names in the song and book.
ReplyDeleteThe book relates to the song in a lot of different ways. One way they connect is in the book the man says "People on the road. Keep your face down." (p.91) In the song, it says "I've got one on the road, and one eye on you." This relates because the man knows there is danger, and knows he has to keep going, he is always trying to move forward, but without looking anyone in the eye, keeping their head down and walking forward. In the song it is saying that he has one eye on the road in front of him, saying that he is moving forward and then his other eye is on you. You can't keep one eye on something and one eye on something else at the same time, so that means he isn't always looking up at the person the whole time, and in the book they are not really ever looking at the person.
ReplyDeleteThe song major minus and the novel "The Road" have many similar ideas and tones. They novel and the song have a fearful tone because both are talking about always being worried about what is going on in the world and trying to survive. In the song it repeats the lyrics, "Got one eye on the road and one on you" and it repeats "and be careful when you're walking into view." Both of these lyrics are showing that who ever the song is talking about is always worried about what is going on all around them. The man and the boy are always worried and use the shopping cart to carry their goods and, "clamped to the handle of the cart was a chrome motorcycle mirror that he used to watch the road behind them." This shows that similar to the lyrics the man and the boy always need to see what is going on all around them like the people being talked about in the lyrics having "one eye on the road and one on you."
ReplyDeleteThe message of the song is about "It's just us against the world," which means looking at the road ahead, looking toward the future, and to which means keep on going even though the odds are against us. In The Road, the Man's priority is getting them to a safer, warmer place to live, to start over. "When he woke in the woods in the dark of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him." looking at him, preparing for the journey ahead, even though the odds are against them
ReplyDeleteMajor Minus by Coldplay is really like the book The Road because in the song they use the lyrics “Don’t believe a word, It’s just us against the world” and those lyrics really connect to the book because its just The man and the boy and there only out for themselves and how the dad always says how were the good guys and the bad guys are everyone else so that’s really them against the world.
ReplyDeleteThe song “Major Minus” is connected to the book The Road because it is about surviving and how the end is coming soon. In the song it says “got one eye on the road and one eye on you” and that could mean that the man is walking down the road and watching the boy because he feels he is responsible for him and wants to take good care of him. In the book the man says to the boy “I wont leave you, he whispered. I wont ever leave you” (114). That shows how the man loves the boy and wants to take care of him. If he was walking down the road and kept the boy in his sight then that is taking good care of the boy and being responsible for him.
